Range

Native to Puerto Rico and the British Virgin Islands

Habitat

Inhabits dry areas, mostly found in low-lying areas with rocky crevices or well-drained soil, like rocky limestone outcrops .

Distinguishing Characteristics

They are yellowish to brown, pebbly-skinned toads with prominent crests above their eyes and snouts that are turned up. They have marbled, golden eyes and are densely covered with warts and blackish spines. Females are larger than males and have larger crests.

Dietary Classification

Diet in the Zoo: crickets, wax worms, pinkie mice

Diet in the Wild: worms, insect larvae, insects and other invertebrates

Behavior/Adaptations

Nocturnal

Status

Listed as critically endangered by the IUCN. Captive-raised tadpoles are being re-introduced into parts of Puerto Rico.
