In 2009, Nashville Zoo created Green Team to support an additional layer of conservation action in connection with the Zoo’s mission. Energy conservation, waste recycling and every-day green practices have paved the way for an invitation for Nashville Zoo members and all local citizens to join us in our endeavor to protect the planet.
The Zoo has a successful recycling program not only for internal staff but also for our guests. Bins are located throughout the Zoo to encourage guests to recycle plastic and aluminum. Additionally, guests can drop off a variety of household items including:
In addition to recycling, the Zoo focuses on water conservation through a variety of operations including the use of water barrels and other collection basins. Dripping faucets are repaired within 24 hours of reporting and lights are turned off in unoccupied areas. The Zoo’s restaurant uses biodegradable utensils and napkins made from recycled paper.
While all Zoo staff members are considered to be on the “Green Team”, the core team members encourage staff to question all practices and innovate ways to reduce resource use. Acting as an example for environment sustainability in our community cannot be achieved unless everyone participates. If you have ideas on how we can improve, please contact us at .
